Pick of the week!

No, no, it's not the legendary actor who starred in "Bullitt" whose work is on display in the "Steve McQueen" exhibit opening at the Art Institute. This Steve McQueen is the British video artist and filmmaker who has been an art-world star for years but has only recently gained widespread recognition as the director of the provocative feature films "Hunger" (2008) and "Shame" (2011), the latter starring Michael Fassbender. The Art Institute is the organizer and sole U.S. venue for this, McQueen's first-ever survey. Opening weekend activities include a reception, artist talk, film screenings and VIP reception and party at After Dark in the Modern Wing. Sunday through Jan. 6 at Art Institute of Chicago, 111 S. Michigan Ave.; 312-443-3600, artinstituteofchicago.org
